Project Brief
The broad objective of this data is to support the exploration of power challenges faced by slum communities in obtaining a safe, legal, affordable, and reliable electrical connection. This study focuses on slum communities in the Ugandan capital city of Kampala. We will collaborate with the organization YouthMappers to perform infrastructure surveys in the slum communities.
The data product was collected by the local chapter of YouthMappers at Makerere University in Kampala and is a part of the methods deployed in the project. The students, together with community youths, visited 25 communities and mapped the locations of streetlamps, utility poles, transformers, among other infrastructure, as well as whether each building in the survey area has a visible electrical connection or not. A local electrician, as well as a representative from ACTogether, accompanied the YouthMappers teams.
